Can I break my Diamond?

I have been in the jewelry business since 1970 and unfortunately I have seen hundreds of broken or damaged diamonds in that time. Most people are familiar with Moh's scale of hardness for stones beginning with Talc (yes, it's a stone when found) which has an assigned hardness of 1. Then we compare Diamond's hardness of 10. Apparently this has led to a misunderstanding that a diamond will never break because it is the hardest stone known to mankind.

There is a very simple explanation to this confusion. If a diamond would not break then we would never be able to cut it into a beautiful gemstone. However, cutting can only be accomplished with a diamond impregnated saw blade and the careful hand of an experienced craftsman.
